Birdies aplenty

January 28, 2008
Last night I set out some birdseed in the backyard because it has been cool and snowy here.  I woke this morning to find a flock of varied thrushes hopping around and eating the seeds.  On furthur observation I noted that individual birds were guarding their own piles of seed from others.  At one point the fence looked like a boarder crossing with little sentries.  They were even keeping the squirrels at bay!
Birds use body language to show aggression.  They lower their wings, raise their tail feathers and rush forward.  Anyone who was a kid on a farm would remember this behaviour from being chased by geese.  (They make excellent watchdogs).
