We have been watching a couple of bald eagles from Hornby Island via a web cam.  A fellow was able to install a camera on an established nest prior to the nesting season and the usual eagle couple returned.  It is a streaming video website and the picture and sound is great to watch.  The site has been so popular that they have been having trouble keeping up with demand.  They laid two eggs, but unfortunately they weren’t viable and it is now past the hatching due date and it doesn’t look like either will produce chicks.  The website owner suspects a number of causes, but most likely the eggs didn’t hatch because they were not fertilized due to the age of the couple.  In my line of work we would call this problem advanced maternal age.  They probably had chicks in the past, but because they are older the chances are more remote.
